Far From You Book Angel

  • Apr. 2nd, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Recently, Lisa Schroeder ran a contest for her new release Far From You.  But it wasn't your average contest, by far.  Lisa had asked that the contest winners become Book Angels.  What is a Book Angel, you ask?

Well, Lisa asked each of us to spread the love and give her book to someone who needs a little pick-me-up, or a little inspiration, or something along those lines.

I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of Lisa's book angels.

Though I had decided who I would give the book to as soon as I received notification that I had won, it took a while for me to connect with her.  You know how it goes, scheduling conflicts, trips, weather.....

I was lucky enough to get to see her Tuesday night.

I chose to give the book to a young lady that I know from my hometown.  She is 13 years old and LOVES to read.  Now, there is no tragic story that goes along with this.  She just comes from your average middle class, hard working family.  Her family has been hit like the rest of us by the struggling economy.  They strain to keep food on the table and the mortgage paid.  "E" is not old enough to hold a job yet, but she babysits for extra money.

As I mentioned previously, E loves to read.  Her parents encourage her to read, but cannot afford to buy her books as fast as she can read them.  She must purchase her own books.  And we all know the salary of a babysitter!  And it seems that with less people going out, there are fewer babysitting opportunities to go around these days.  Especially in a small town.

So, after a book club meeting, I went to her house and presented her the book.  Her first impression was that it is beautiful.  She seemed touched by the personal inscription that Lisa had written, she has never had an autographed copy of a book before.  I am pretty sure this one will be on her bookcase for a really long time.  E was very grateful for the book and the experience and plans to "pay it forward" somehow.

Thank you Lisa for the opportunity.  I hope your inspiration continues to multiply.

(I would post pictures, but I forgot my camera that night, sorry.)
